Lake Sabrina Fishing Report

The lake was coming up about 5 feet in a 24-hour period until Friday. Those of you who were up at the lake earlier this year wouldn't believe that the lake is as full as it is now. Earlier in the week we were in the high 60's to low 70's then back down to the low 30's, but we're heading back up. Third, we got the tagged fish for the Derby - 11 Tagged Alpers ranging in prizes from $30 to $300 and 23 additional Alpers. We're looking for the first DFG stocking this coming week. Fourth, Rick and I were at the back of the lakeThursday and spotted two Bald Eagles - such majestic birds.
Guess I best talk a bit about fishing - it's all working at the Inlets - Lures, PowerBait, NightCrawler, Jigs and Salmon Eggs. Those of you that enjoy moving around the lake caught a fair amount of fish using flashers and a NightCrawler - just watch out for those rocks in the shallows. Drift fishing (which is figuring which way the wind is blowing and which way you want to 'drift' towards and turning off the motor) the channels with a NightCrawler was working good. Shore fishing with NightCrawler and PowerBait has also been working. Couple of those Alpers came out this weekend, Dustan Moore of Bakersfield via Olancha caught a 3-1/4lb Alper on a Panther Martin spinner and Chris Henderson of El Monte landed a 2-3/4lb Alper along with an additional four rainbows. Good job, Guys!
Bishop Creek Canyon Summer Classic Trout derby. Enter by June 15th for double entry into the raffle. All DFG rules for fishing apply. Contestants can enter at Culver's ~ Mac's ~ Bishop Creek Lodge ~ Creekside RV Park ~ Parchers Resort ~ South Lake Boat Landing ~ Cardinal Village Resort ~ Bishop Chamber of Commerce and Lake Sabrina Boat Landing. Contestants must bring tag and proof of registration to the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce to claim prize. Special thanks to the Bishop Chamber of Commerce & to Inyo County for Co-Sponsoring the event and to all prize donors. If you have any questions in regards to the Derby, please contact Tawni at 760-873-8405.
Once again, the California High School Rodeo Association 2010 State Finals will be held in Bishop June 14 - 19 at the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds. It is truly a pleasure to deal with these kids - so very very polite. If your not doing anything in the evening during that week, head to the fairgrounds Monday thru Friday at 6:00pm or Saturday at 7:00pm and support these athletes in their quest to represent California at the National Finals. General Admission is $5.00. Temperatures were all over the thermometer this week from the mid 70s to high 20s for the highs. Looks like the warm weather is returning, maybe even rising to the high 70s, but don't forget to pack that jacket - just in case. You can check www.weather.gov and enter Aspendell, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com
Still not sure if the North Lake campground is opened yet, I'll try and find out this week for you. The price this year to camp at the Forestry campgrounds are $21.00. The only USFS campground that accepts reservations is Four Jeffery. There 31 sites available for reservations: you can book on-line at www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777. All other campsites at Four Jeffery and the other campgrounds are first come, first served. There is a full hook-up RV campground - Creekside RV park which is on the road to South Lake.
Lo still hasn't got his new 'doo' and Max has learned not to jump out of the boats. Joe hasn't gone on any more boat rides so not sure if he learned anything on his last excursion and Nimrod hasn't gone on any boat rides this year yet - we'll keep trying to get him in the boat. Remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen. You've got that sun coming at you in all directions and the rays from the snow are deadly! Also, remember when after applying sunscreen, bug juice or any other fu-fu juice, wash your hands! The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. You know it tastes yucky, the fish think it tastes yucky, too, although have you ever tasted PowerBait or worms - to each their own.
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing has gone to summer hours. That means we'll be opening at 7:00am and stay open until 7:00pm. The Café is now open daily for breakfast at 7:00am to 11:00am with Lunch being served from 11:00am to 4:00pm. We have homemade pie, sodas, beer, wine, coffee, tea and hot cocoa.
