Shamalamma Fish On! Jay Fair topline & hot orange never fail in Oct! We've been in anywhere from 6-20ft of water, Jay Fair hot orange trolling flies ruled today. Yup, outer rock piles. Surface temps starting out 61-63.xF. Low ambient temps in the mid to high 30's & highs in the low to mid 80's keeping the lake temps fairly steady & below 65F. Just going to get better! & it's not unusual to see surface temps in the low 60's in October & the latest seasonal surface temps in the low 60's was thru late November, historically. But the fish are doing what they do. We have a few weed drifts scattered on the lake but not bad, some foam here & there, a little algae in places from high winds scouring the rock piles. All in all, the lake is looking pretty good & the bite has been pretty darn good once ya find em. Last week, on lures, orange was our best color over the depths to 20ft. Various depths caught fish but mostly 12-14ft deep. We've changed tactics this week. The fish know the solstice has passed no matter what water temps are...some of em move...migratory by nature ... & they do like low 60's & are fighting hard, flying & resisting arrest quite well. Our trout tend to migrate back & forth, in and out & side to side & it can change quickly as we transition to fall. We still have heavy bait balls on the east side & a lot of the trout simply take on residency there while other move around. West side bait balls are more scattered & tend to stay relatively deep till the pods rise mid morning. We should see some cooler days coming in a week or so. In the mean time, keep your hooks sharp & remember there's times we have to fish for the trout we don't see on the scope.
