We're fishing Shasta Lake 5-6 days a week and we're currently targeting big browns and the occasional rainbow trout.  Some days are better than others just like you find in every fishing venue. Consistently caching browns is the key to our success on Shasta Lake because these trout have feeding and travel patterns.  Stay on top of these patterns and you'll stay on top of some pretty good fishing this time of the year.  We're catching most of our rainbows up high in the water column and the browns are sitting down a bit deeper in 20'-30', likely deeper.  With the clear water conditions we have this year, many of the browns we are catching are coming after our baits from deeper water or off structure.  Most of the rainbow trout are out in open water cruising the surface.  Browns are taking baits presented off downriggers and the rainbows are mostly coming on side planers with 1-2 oz. snap weights 50' in front of Trinidad Tackle Optimizer Jr. spoon.  Lots of presentations will attract strikes, but I've been sticking with whats working best for me.  Brown season will last through May in most years so you still have time to get out on Shasta Lake to catch a trophy brown.  The big rainbows will start to show up in better numbers in May and will be easily caught and located through September.  We'll see you on the water!
