McCloud Reservoir has been one of my go to summer spots for many years now. It is hard to beat the beautiful scenery and fantastic fishing that this body of water offers.
Brown and Rainbow Trout are the two fish this reservoir is known for. The fish range in size from 6 to 24 inches and most fall in that 10 to 16 inch range. These hard fighting trout often put a great battle on light tackle. A slow trolled Seps dodger an worm combo is a year round fish catcher and often all you need to catch a few for the BBQ.Many other methods will for these fish and catching them of the fly rod or spin casting can be a blast as well.
These fish are excellent eating fish and often have pinky orange colored meat, which is the best. McCloud is a cold water fishery year round so don't let that surface temperature of water fool you. If you have ever swam in McCloud then you know what I am talking about from 5 feet down the water rapidly drops to mid 50 degrees and lower. The McCloud River that flows in the reservoir is always below 50 degree and often hovers around 45 to 49 degrees even when air temperatures are near a 100.
This is a great family trip. My last two trips are why I say this. The action is hard to my guys caught and released close to a 100 fish over two different days. That kind of action is hard to beat, then mix in glassy water conditions, beautiful mountains, trees, an.d wildlife, you start to get the picture.
